Dr Jonathan Whelan

Consultant in Anaesthetics & PHEM

Tier 1 Solo Responder

Dr Jonathan Whelan is an Anaesthetic Consultant in the Royal Gwent, with specialist interests in Paediatrics, Major General Surgery and Critical Care. He is also a Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine Consultant with the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) Cymru, Assistant Medical Director for the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust, and through involvement with motorsport medicine he is the Medical Officer for the British Touring Car Championship, having formerly been the Chief Medical Officer for Thruxton circuit in Hampshire

Dr Whelan’s interest in Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM) emerged through his interest in motorsports events, consequently becoming involved with the British Association of Immediate Care (BASICs) since 1996 when he was a medical student and becoming an active responder as a registrar in Wales from 2008. During this time, he achieved the Diploma in Immediate medical care (DipIMC) to secure a qualification in PHEM to support his trackside work. He has subsequently achieved the Fellowship in Immediate Medical Care (FIMC).

Through his experience, his key words of advice relate to the team environment, with team work being crucial. “The role of solo responders is changing, and the potential benefits delivered by a well trained & well governed team are amazing.” However, with the very nature of Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine unpredictable, and even as paid PHEM roles continue to develop, volunteers help to provide the flexibility and resilience needed to support fluctuating demand and improve patient care. This is why you will continue to see Dr Whelan responding around the Bridgend, Cardiff and Newport areas.
